Essential Oils vs. Medications

All my life I have been told to use over the counter medications or prescription drugs for any ailment I have. While I understand the need for some medications, I refuse to pop a pill for just anything. With all the antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria, viruses and disease, it's time we learn about alternatives. They can be as potent as, or better than "drugs". Most drugs these days are man-made, synthetic versions of the components in essential oils. I would rather use the unaltered, untouched, pure version anyway.

I dislike this shirt and every other item that says "there's an oil for that". There is NOT an oil for everything, and there shouldn't be. You might be able to find a recommendation for an essential oil to use with any ailment known to man-kind, but should you actually use it????

Essential oils are wonderful. They are powerful, but they have their place. Applying an essential oil or blend of essential oils for serious medical conditions is not the time nor the place to use them. While we have eliminated most medications from our house, we will never eliminate all of them, nor should you.

If you have heart disease, low blood pressure, high blood pressure, seizures or any medical condition that requires the use of prescription medication to keep you and/or your body functioning "normally", replacing those drugs with essential oils would NOT be a wise decision. Essential oils can definitely be used in addition to the medications you are already taking, but they should never replace such medications. If you are under the care of a naturopathic doctor and the new protocol has been made to remove prescriptions and replace with essential oils, that is a different story. Please do not remove medications keeping you alive to start using essential oils without the consent of a medical professional. Everyone is different. Every metabolism is different. We all react to medications and essential oils differently. Going "cold turkey" on any medication you have been taking for a very long time, isn't advised. Please consult a qualified medical professional before removing prescription medications and/or adding essential oils. Essential oils can interfere with the potency of prescriptions.

Essential oils are great for pain relief, headaches, allergies, hot flashes, sleep and many other non-life threatening ailments. About a month ago, our 5 year old had a rash, a large one on his back, over his shoulder blade. It was weird, in the shape of a triangle. I had my suspicions it was Lyme disease. We went to the doctor, he was tested, the test came back positive for strep but not for Lyme. Lyme has so many false positives and negatives, since we were treating the strep, I had them add in an extra week of antibiotics for the Lyme. In my opinion, it is better to be safe than sorry. I know I am able to help Lyme with essential oils, but my son is so young. What if it wasn't cleared up quick enough? What if it was never cleared up? Was I willing to risk him having debilitating joint aches, feeling run down, or any other side effects from not properly removing Lyme from his system? No, no I wasn't. We used the antibiotics and added in essential oils for the throat discomfort, and different oils for the major discomfort in the joints and headache.

So, if you are talking to someone and you mention something going on with your body, if the other person tells you "there is an oil for that", think long and hard. If it isn't life threatening and you feel that is the best course of action, go for it. Only you truly know your body. Always, always, always dilute the oils and do not ingest unless working with someone trained in aromatic medicine. Educate yourself and know who you are working with. It's your health we are talking about.
