Essential Oil Spotlight - Peppermint (Mentha x piperita)

Peppermint is one of my favorite essential oils.  It is so versatile, refreshing and affordable!!!!   I always have a diluted roller bottle in my purse for headaches, pain or as you will see below, other things.  It is so wonderful, I thought I would share with you my top 12 ways to use Peppermint Oil.  Remember, since peppermint contains the component menthol, it can be neurotoxic when applied near the face of a child, so it is not recommended for children under 6.

Emotional and Mental Uses:

Used for clear thinking, concentration, purification, mental clarity, dispel negativity, cleansing sacred space and ritual objects, increase psychic sensitivity, clears energy, uplifts the mind to reduce fatigue, awakens, refreshes, stimulates new ideas and creativity, and supports self confidence.

Physical Uses:

Used for digestive system support, respiratory system support, achy head, tenderness, soreness, achiness, circulatory system support, central nervous system support, cooling, and immune system support.

Paired Crystals:

If you wanted to pair crystals with this lovely oil, obsidian, ametrine, kunzite, carnelian, amber, dumortierite, and tigers eye are all excellent choices.  Wear them as a necklace or bracelet, carry in a pouch, or just have in your pocket.

Blends well with:

Basil, Bergamot, Cedarwood, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Ginger, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lime, Lemon, Lemongrass, Sweet Marjoram, Niaouli, Pine, Rosemary, Sage, Tea Tree, Thyme

Uses:

Diffuse, massage, topical

Precautions:

Always dilute, old or oxidized oils should not be used.  Peppermint is a known mucous membrane irritant.  A dilution of less than 5% is recommended.   Peppermint also has contraindications and drug interactions.  It can cause cardiac fibrillation, or problems with G6PD deficiency.  Also not recommended to be used orally by anyone with GERD. It should not be used with children under 6 as it can cause central nervous system problems in young children, take care when using around infants and babies. *1 Below are recommended dilution ratios.

Please dilute accordingly:

In 1 ounce of carrier oil:

  • 0.5% (1/2 percent) - 1 years old to 3 years old  (2-3 drops)

  • 1% - 6 years old to 10 years old (5-6 drops)

  • 2% - 10 years to adult (10-12 drops)

  • 3% - 4% adult bad cold, infection, acute pain (18-24 drops)
