Are Essential Oils Always the Answer?
I don't believe that any healing modality is able to fix all ailments. Not even essential oils, although they are pretty awesome!. There is a time and place for alternative modalities and medications.
A few days ago, while visiting my dad and step-mom, my dad said to me, “you know, you should stop posting on FB when your family gets sick. People are going to think your essential oils don’t work.” My reaction was, “there is no possible way to keep from getting sick… ever. We all get sick at some point.” It got me thinking. Do people think that essential oils don’t work because someone like me, a trained aromatherapist, has a family that gets sick from time to time? That lead to me to do some research. I love research, especially when it comes to oils.
What I found from my research is this….. there is no one on the planet that will be healthy 100% of the time. Granted, there are people who are healthier than others, but everyone gets sick at one time or another. A lot of that is based on how your immune system is functioning. I live in a house with my husband, a high schooler, 2 grade schoolers and a pre-schooler. It is almost impossible to keep everyone here healthy all the time. However, when we do get something, it is usually gone in a day or 2 because of the oils. Since my 2 youngest never went to daycare, their immune systems are not like kids who are exposed to everything under the sun at daycare. It doesn’t mean they are underdeveloped, it just means they are different. My 8yo did go to daycare and is now in 3rd grade. When we moved and changed schools a year and a half ago, he got sick the first few months. He was out of school so much that we got the dreaded truancy letter. His immune system needed to be kicked into high gear since he was dealing with a new school and new germs. That’s where essential oils came into play. I used some supporting blends on him, after that he wasn’t out the rest of the year due to illness. Even though we use essential oils regularly, we still get the sniffles or an occasional stomach bug. That isn't the fault of the essential oil. It's how our body reacts to the illness, if it isn't functioning properly by eating healthy, exercising and taking care of ourselves, the illness happens.
I have friends who eat right, take supplements and do just about everything right with their health. They still get sick!!! The difference is, when we get sick, we are down for a day or two because I have access to an arsenal of essential oils to get us back on track quickly. An exception to this was my poor husband. On Christmas Day he got really sick, he contracted the coxsackie virus. He had the blisters in his mouth and down his esophagus. He was incorrectly diagnosed twice before we received the correct one.
Since it’s a virus, there is basically nothing you can do about it except treat the symptoms. The virus aggravated his esophagus and stomach to the point where he couldn’t eat or drink, for 6 miserable days. I made an essential oil blend to help with the major discomfort in his esophagus and stomach giving him time to choke down food to sustain life. Between the magic mouthwash (prescription) and lavender hydrosol, the blisters in his mouth were under control and the essential oils were helping with the esophagus and stomach. The essential oils are what helped him, had he been diagnosed correctly from the get go, the suffering could have been avoided.
Please don’t under estimate the power of essential oils. They are wonderful and extremely potent. With that said, please make sure you are using them correctly. Never use them in water as a water flavoring agent, do not ingest unless you are working with someone trained in internal use and always, always, always dilute. Just because they are natural does not mean they don’t come with risks. Less is always more.
