Essential Oils are NOT Water Flavoring Agents

I wish I had a dollar for every time I saw someone suggest using your essential oils in a glass of water.  I would be a millionaire many times over!  Not only is this practice very unsafe, it is wasting a precious resource mother nature is giving us.  What people do not realize is those who are suggesting this unsafe practice are making money off of you.  The more oils you use, the more you buy.  Period.  These same people also suggest using oils undiluted on the skin, again, another practice that is highly unsafe.  Unfortunately money is a big factor for many people, they are more worried about making money than educating you on safe usage.

As an educated professional, here is my list of reasons why you shouldn't drink your oils.

  • Each time you use an essential oil, you are using a highly concentrated substance.  To learn more about the actual concentration, read my blog post “The Power of Essential Oils”.

  • When you add essential oils to your water, it isn't mixing with any of the water.  You are basically tipping your head back and pouring that oil directly into your mouth.  One sip may have no essential oils in it, and the next may have all of them.  No amount of stirring or shaking is going to get the oil and water to mix together.  The oils will always float.

  • Depending on the oil used, you could immediately do damage to your mouth in the form of a burn.  No matter what oil you choose, over time, those undiluted oils (remember they don't mix with water) can cause burns to your mouth, esophagus and damage the stomach lining.

  • Everything that is put into your body, your elimination organs must remove.  After you have possibly burned your mouth, esophagus and destroyed your stomach, those oils are going to go to work on the kidneys, liver, pancreas and other organs.

  • If you know anything about digestion, you know that nutrients are absorbed in the intestines.  First, what has been eaten or drank will be mixed with stomach acid and broken down.  By the time it gets to the intestines where it will be absorbed, the medicinal properties are greatly reduced.  They may even be non-existant.  Essential oils should never be taken internally "just because". They are NOT a water flavoring agent.  Internal use should be done with a specific purpose in mind.  Unless you are using them for the stomach, intestinal issues, or bladder issues, why are you taking essential oils internally anyway?  It is much safer to use them diluted, topically on the skin.

  • Why are you really taking them internally?  To make your water taste good?  Use the real fruit instead.  It will taste better and be so much easier on your body.  Even organic lemons, limes, and grapefruits are quite inexpensive.

  • You are building up your immunity to the chemical constituents in the essential oils by using them too much.  By using lemon or another oil in your water, another essential oil with some of the same constituents may not work as well in small doses.

  • Some of the same chemical constituents in essential oils are synthetically created to produce over the counter and prescription drugs.  By adding these essential oils to your water, you are basically taking something as strong as a medication.  If you are not sick and don't need medicine, why take it?  I don't know very many people who pop a Tylenol or Advil just for the heck of it.

Please, save yourself from agony and possibly an organ transplant (yes, I do know some who need new organs from drinking too much essential oil in their water).  Use the fruit instead of highly concentrated oils.  Should you have any questions, please email me at melissa@sweetwillowspirit.com.

Love and light,

Melissa
