Amazing Benefits of Colostrum

You may have heard of colostrum, especially if you have kids.  It is one of the most amazing "superfoods" around.  I know the term superfood has been thrown around a lot lately by supplement companies, but this truly is an amazing substance.  When I recently saw my holistic dentist, he advised I start taking it for candida overgrowth in my body, especially the mouth.  The over growth can be contributed to poor digestion among other things.

According to webmd.com "Colostrum is a milky fluid that comes from the breasts of humans, cows, and other mammals the first few days after giving birth, before true milk appears. It contains proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and proteins (antibodies) that fight disease-causing agents such as bacteria and viruses."

In my research, I have found that athletes use bovine colostrum to help burn fat, build lean muscle, and increase stamina while improving athletic performance. Bovine colostrum is not banned by the International Olympic Committee.

Bovine colostrum is also used for boosting the immune system, healing, injuries, repairing the nervous system, mood improvement and sense of well being, slowing and reversing aging, and as an agent for killing bacteria and fungus.

According to my health studies, your gut (intestinal tract) is where the breakdown and absorption of food happens.  It is also where waste products are eliminated.  Because of this, it can detoxify your body.  I had no idea, but about 80% of your immune system activity happens in the intestines!  As you can see, it is one of the most important places in your body!

Improper nutrition, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, stress (low cortisol levels) and other factors can wreak havoc on the gut. Colostrum is loaded with antibodies that stimulate the production of SIgA.   SIgA (Secretory IgA) is an immunoglobulin protein that plays a central role in your overall health.  It is a type of antibody that protects against infections in the membranes lining the mouth, airways, and digestive tract.  It is our first line of defense against bacteria, parasites, fungi, toxins, viruses. and makes up a lot of our immune system. It is also associated with the good bacteria in the gut like probiotics (Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, etc.).

According to pubmed.com, in a published article titled Secretory IgA's Complex Roles in Immunity and Mucosal Homeostasis in the Gut.  "Secretory IgA (SIgA) serves as the first line of defense in protecting the intestinal epithelium from enteric toxins and pathogenic microorganisms. Through a process known as immune exclusion, SIgA promotes the clearance of antigens and pathogenic microorganisms from the intestinal lumen by blocking their access to epithelial receptors, entrapping them in mucus, and facilitating their removal by peristaltic and mucociliary activities."  So basically, if you have a healthy gut with SIgA present, your chances of getting sick may be greatly diminished.  The S
