Castor Oil Packs

Adapted from the book “The Oil That Heals A Physician’s Successes with Castor Oil Treatments” written by William A. McGarey, M.D.
Castor oil "packs" can be a wonderful way to infuse many of the healing components of castor oil directly into your body. It is possible to heal the tissues and organs below the surface of the skin where the castor oil pack is placed. It has been known to help with pain, inflammation, constipation, circulation, improve liver detoxification, support female organs like the uterus and ovaries, improve lymphatic circulation and so much more!  These packs can be used all over the body, not just the abdomen.  Just make sure the piece of flannel can be folded 3-4 times while still able to cover the area of need.
If you have never used castor oil before, please do a "patch test" before use to ensure you aren't allergic to the oil.  To do a patch test, apply a drop of castor oil to the inner side of the arm.  Cover with a band-aid and wait 24 hours to see if there is a reaction.

  • High quality cold-pressed castor oil – preferably organic

  • A hot water bottle or heating pad

  • Plastic wrap, sheet of plastic, or plastic garbage bag

  • Plain, WHITE flannel – nothing dyed

  • Two large old bath towels – may get stained

  • Cut a piece of flannel 10” x 48” (it doesn’t have to be perfect but needs to cover upper abdomen and liver)

  • Fold flannel in ½, then in ½ again

  • With room temperature oil, pour onto flannel to saturate entire piece - this can get messy

  • Lie with towel under your back (with your something under your knees if needed) • Place oily flannel on your abdomen

  • Cover flannel with the sheet of plastic

  • Add hot water bottle or heating pad on top of the plastic

  • Cover everything with the old towel to insulate the heat

  • Leave pack on for at least 1 hour, 1 ½ hours is better

  • When finished, you can either rub the remaining oil into the skin or remove the oil by washing with a solution of two tablespoons of baking soda to one-quart water (soap and water work also

  • You can reuse the pack several times, up to 20 or more – throw away when they get severely discolored or start to smell

  • Store the pack in a sealed mason jar out of the sunlight

  • Add more oil to the pack as needed

  • For maximum effectiveness Edward Cayce (whom the book is about) suggested taking 2 teaspoons of olive oil by mouth when using the pack on the abdomen and to use the pack for 3 days in a row. Then take a break for 4 days.  Repeat.
