Essential Oil Spotlight - 18 Ways Eucalyptus Can Help You!

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) is a leaf oil, that is steam distilled, with a top note. Eucalyptus has a fresh, clean, medicinal and slightly woody scent. It truly reminds me of the days of old when my parents would use Vick's vapo rub on us as children if we were sick with a cold.

There are many different botanical names of Eucalyptus. It is important to understand and know which one you are buying.

One of the main constituents in Eucalyptus globulus is 1,8 cineole. Also knows as Eucalyptol. This constituent can be up to 81% or higher in your essential oil. It is very important to obtain a GC/MS report with your oil so you know how high that is. Due to the amount of 1,8 cineole in this oil, it is not recommended for children under the age of 6. Or around asthmatics as it can cause breathing issues in some.

In lesser amounts, 1, 8 Cineole can also be found in camphor, bay laurel, tea tree, sweet basil, rosemary, sage, and cannabis sativa plants.

Eucalyptus is an evergreen tree native to Australia but cultivated all over the world. According to the University of Michigan, "The main ingredient of eucalyptus oil, cineole, may help speed the healing of acute sinusitis."

According to, in an article dated April 2010, Immune-modifying and antimicrobial effects of Eucalyptus oil and simple inhalation devices, "Eucalyptus oil (EO) and its major component, 1,8-cineole, have antimicrobial effects against many bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), viruses, and fungi (including Candida)."

In a study published on dated April 2, 2010, Effect of Eucalyptus Oil Inhalation on Pain and Inflammatory Responses after Total Knee Replacement: A Randomized Clinical Trial, "Eucalyptus oil has been used to treat influenza infection, owing to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. Moreover, 1,8-cineole was found to reduce cytokines that cause inflammation...., and to significantly reduce edema and CRP at sites of inflammation throughout the entire body."

As you can see, it's great for reducing bacteria, helping with pain, but there are so many more benefits.
