Measles Outbreaks

If you have been paying attention at all to the fear mongering media for the past few months, you know that measles, mumps and pertussis outbreaks are a hot topic. The problem with all the media coverage is, they aren't being exactly truthful. No surprise there.

Let's talk about measles facts so we can put your minds at ease. This disease has been around since the 7th century, only recently has it become something equivalent of the bubonic plague. We didn't have a vaccine for it until 1963, AFTER a steep decline in cases already. Also, at the end of this article I am going to offer you an alternative. I am not here to blame anything or anyone. That isn't helpful. I want to offer insight, facts and a possible solution.

So, let's be real here. Straight from the CDC website, "[Measles] can spread to others through coughing and sneezing. Also, measles virus can live for up to two hours in an airspace where the infected person coughed or sneezed. If other people breathe the contaminated air or touch the infected surface, then touch their eyes, noses, or mouths, they can become infected.” 2 HOURS! That isn't a very long time for something to be an issue. Unless you are spending days with someone infected, the chances of you getting an infectious disease like measles by casually passing through a gas station, mall, store or momentarily sharing the same space as someone who is contagious, the chances of you getting measles isn't very likely. So, if you are in an area that someone with the measles has been, even if you didn't know it, they need to be coughing around you or touching things that you touch. Before you eat, touch your face, eyes, nose, mouth, WASH YOUR HANDS. If you are very concerned, wear a mask.

Someone with the measles was at a Skyzone in New Jersey, "Officials say that a New York City resident with a confirmed case of the measles visited two locations in April: The Sky Zone in South Plainfield on April 22 between the hours of 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. and River 978 Banquet Hall in Lakewood on April 23 between the hours of 6 p.m. and 1 a.m.” If you were there before them, no worries, if you were there after them, unless it was within the window of opportunity for the virus, again, no worries.

Infected people can spread measles to others from four days before through four days after the rash appears. (1) Most people have no idea they are getting sick with anything, let alone the measles. If you feel sick, stay home. If you suspect you are getting the measles, stay home. If you are out and about, cover your mouth when you sneeze and WASH YOUR HANDS before you eat or touch your face.

If you are still concerned, read this article, Measles: Facts and Misconceptions in a Near-Hysterical Media Environment. This journalist is receiving no compensation for the article. She doesn't get kick backs from drug companies or bonus' for vaccinating her patients. She states:

  • 67% of cases are in New York City and New York state.

  • All of the original sources of infection are foreign countries.

  • The most number of cases came in from the Philippines, followed by Ukraine.

  • Not all of the measles patients and carriers are unvaccinated people; some were fully or partly vaccinated

  • Twenty-nine per cent (29%), or about one in three, were vaccinated or had unknown/unproven status

According to the CDC website, "The only measles virus vaccine now available in the United States is a live, more attenuated Edmonston-Enders strain (formerly called “Moraten”). The vaccine is available combined with mumps and rubella vaccines as MMR, or combined with mumps, rubella, and varicella vaccine as MMRV (ProQuad). The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that MMR be used when any of the individual components is indicated. Single-antigen measles vaccine is not available in the United States." I hear people every day state that you can't get measles from the measles vaccine. That is entirely incorrect. Studies show, a LIVE vaccine (such as MMR - measles, mumps and rubella, rotavirus, chicken pox, shingles and influenza) sheds where you are actually breathing out or excreting the virus for days, weeks, even months after you get the vaccine. (3, 4, 5, 6. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13)

Again on a different page of the CDC website, "A live, further attenuated preparation of the Enders-Edmonston virus strain that is grown in chick embryo fibroblast cell culture, licensed in 1968, is the only measles virus vaccine now available in the United States. This further attenuated vaccine (formerly called "Moraten") causes fewer adverse reactions than the Edmonston B vaccine." It may be fewer, but there are still a lot of reactions. It's like playing Russian Roulette with your children, what is going to be the factor that is going to cause a reaction for you or them? There are no safety studies so in all honesty, we don't know.

Not everyone who is exposed to measles is going to get it. Also, not everyone who is vaccinated won't get it. Susceptibility is key here. Reduce your susceptibility, reduce your chance of getting it. How do you do that?

  • STOP STRESSING!!!! Stress is proven to weaken the immune system and make you more susceptible. If your job is horribly stressful, maybe now is the time to fine a new one. Worry is not our friend.

  • Adopt a healthy lifestyle. What does that consist of?

  • Eat REAL food. If it comes from a box with nutrition facts, out of a bag or a drive up window, chances are it is devoid of necessary nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. Stay in the outside isles of the grocery store where the fresh produce and food is and start cooking healthy meals. If you are time starved, meal prep.

  • Sleep - I cannot stress this enough. Sleep is when you body is recharging and healing. Without sleep, you cannot heal. We know that when our children are sick and they sleep, they are healing. Same for us adults. Sleep is healing

  • Exercise - you don't have to exercise every day. 2-3 times a week is great. Take a walk on your lunch break, park in the outer part of the parking lot at the mall or store, take the stairs instead of the elevator, every little bit helps!

  • Dry brush - dry brushing is an amazing way to get your lymphatic system going. The lymph nosed can become stagnant if you aren't up and moving around pushing the fluid throughout your body. 10 minutes of vigorous drying brushing before a shower or bath can be equivalent to walking 5 miles.

  • Water - drink 1/2 hour body weight in CLEAN (needs to be filtered if you live in a city or drink water with chlorine, fluoride or other impurities) water daily. More is not better, we just need to make sure we are hydrated and flushing the toxins from the body.

  • Companionship - hang out with people that recharge you, not bring you down. If you are constantly surrounded by people who make you unhappy, you are more susceptible to disease.

​What benefit do the measles have?

There are studies that suggest a link between naturally acquired measles infection and a reduced risk of Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas, as well as a reduced risk of atopic diseases such as hay fever, eczema and asthma (3).

Now, I am not saying to become complacent or just shrug it off. Measles can be an issue for those who are immunocompromised or already have life-limiting illnesses. What I am saying is, use common sense, was your hands, stay home if you are sick and stop stressing about it. Be concerned, but stop worrying.
